Which filling should you choose?

Start with how you like cushioning to feel. All three choices on our orthopaedic knee pillow use the same compact, contoured format, with an approximate listed size of 23 × 15 × 9.5 cm. Changing the filling changes the feel and, for wool, how you can adjust the cushioning.

Compare the three fillings on our main knee pillow
Filling Listed feel Why consider it? What to know
Original foam Soft Resilient cushioning in a shaped foam core. The lowest-priced filling in the current range. The core is not an adjustable loose filling.
Memory foam Soft A foam that responds to warmth and contours around contact. Choose it for that surface feel. It has the same approximate listed size as the original foam option.
British wool Medium Natural wool filling whose amount can be adjusted. Remove or add wool to change the cushioning, then distribute it evenly. The feel depends on the amount of filling.

The prices in the product card above update from our live listing. Soft and medium are the product selector’s labels, rather than a measured comfort score. There is no single best filling for everyone.

Which product page should you use?

Use the main knee pillow page if you want to compare the three fillings in one selector. The individual links above open Original Foam, Memory Foam or British Wool already selected, so check that selection before adding to your basket.

If you already want wool, you can also use the natural British wool knee pillow page. This is a separate product listing with one wool option; it does not offer foam or memory foam. Its description focuses on adjustable wool filling, a removable cotton cover and a polycotton strap.

Wool appearing on both pages does not add a fourth filling type. Both product listings are included above so you can choose the one that suits the way you want to shop.

Check the size and fit for side sleeping

Both listings give approximate dimensions of 23 × 15 × 9.5 cm. Those are the outer measurements, not a promise that the pillow will stay 9.5 cm thick under pressure. Foam compresses, and the amount of wool changes the cushioning in use.

Look for comfortable separation between your knees. The pillow should fit your resting position without forcing your legs too far apart. A smaller knee cushion provides local cushioning; it does not replace a full-body support or a bed wedge.

  • Choose original foam if you prefer resilient foam cushioning and want the lowest-priced option.
  • Consider memory foam if you prefer a material that contours gradually around contact.
  • Consider wool if you want a natural filling and the ability to change the amount of cushioning.

Position the pillow and adjust the strap

  1. Lie in your usual comfortable side-resting position and place the contoured pillow between your knees.
  2. Adjust its position until the cushioning feels comfortable against both legs.
  3. Use the adjustable strap to help keep it in place, fastening it comfortably without restricting movement.
  4. If you choose wool, make small filling adjustments and spread the remaining wool evenly before trying it again.

The strap helps retain the pillow as you move; it is not intended to hold your legs rigidly. Follow any individual positioning instructions you have been given after surgery or for an existing condition.

Care for the cover and filling separately

Both listings include a removable, washable cotton cover. Remove it before cleaning, follow its sewn-in care label and let it dry fully before refitting. A washable cover does not mean that either a foam core or wool filling can go in the washing machine.

For wool, keep any filling you remove clean and dry if you want to add it back later. The foam versions use shaped cores; do not treat them as loose fillings that can be reduced in the same way.

When a different support may suit you

If you need support around the front and back of the body, read the pregnancy pillow guide. If you want a broad inclined surface for resting, see the bed wedge guide. These shapes serve different purposes from a cushion placed between the knees.

Before you order

Check the filling selected, the current price and availability on your chosen product page. Review delivery and returns before ordering. If you are buying because of persistent pain or a recovery plan, ask your healthcare professional which position and support are appropriate.

This guide uses the specifications and options on our two current product listings, checked on 8 September 2026. It compares construction and practical choices; it does not claim hands-on testing or guarantee a medical outcome.

Common questions

Which knee pillow fillings can I order?

The main knee pillow listing offers Original Foam – Soft, Memory Foam – Soft and British Wool – Medium. The separate natural British wool knee pillow listing has one wool option. The links above show the current prices and take you to the relevant listing or selected filling.

Why are there two British wool product links?

British wool is a selectable option on our main knee pillow and is also sold through a dedicated natural British wool listing. The main listing lets you compare all three fillings; the dedicated listing focuses on wool. Both list approximate dimensions of 23 × 15 × 9.5 cm, a removable cotton cover and a strap. Check the details on the listing you choose.

How does original foam differ from memory foam?

Both are labelled Soft in our selector. Original foam provides resilient cushioning, while memory foam responds to warmth and contours around contact. Choose by the feel you prefer; a higher price does not establish which is more comfortable for you.

Can I adjust the filling or thickness?

The wool filling can be added to or removed to change the amount of cushioning. The foam options have shaped cores and are not described as adjustable loose fillings. All have the same approximate listed outer dimensions, but compression and the amount of wool affect the thickness in use.

Do the pillows include a cover and strap?

Both listings include a removable cotton cover and an adjustable leg strap. Position the pillow between your knees and fasten the strap comfortably, without restricting movement.

Can I machine wash a foam or wool knee pillow?

Follow the sewn-in care label for the removable cover and clean it separately. A washable cover does not mean the foam core or wool filling is machine washable. Let the cover dry fully before refitting.

Will a knee pillow treat hip pain or sciatica?

A knee pillow provides cushioning and helps keep the knees comfortably separated. It is not a guaranteed treatment. If you are choosing support for an ongoing condition or following surgery, follow the positioning advice given by your healthcare professional.
